Public Opinion and the Media

Public opinion=citizens’ attitudes about political issues, leaders, institutions, and events

It serves as a political basis of support for politicians

People agree on issues such as: legitimacy of the govt, equality of opportunity, liberty, and democracy

Personal Preferences/Opinions are rooted in self interest, economic, geographic, social status, personal values, attitudes are shaped by parents’ views, education, social groups, gender, racial group, labor unions, religion

People don’t devote enough time to research political issues, they look for cheap and easy answers (Facebook, online news, word of mouth, etc)

Interest groups= opinion leaders who want to shape public opinion and promote ideological causes
