Public Opinion and the Media
Public
opinion=citizens’ attitudes about political issues, leaders, institutions, and
events
It serves as a political basis of support for politicians
People agree on issues such as: legitimacy of the govt,
equality of opportunity, liberty, and democracy
Personal Preferences/Opinions are rooted in self interest,
economic, geographic, social status, personal values, attitudes are shaped by
parents’ views, education, social groups, gender, racial group, labor unions,
religion
People don’t devote enough time to research political issues,
they look for cheap and easy answers (Facebook, online news, word of mouth,
etc)
Interest groups= opinion leaders who want to shape public opinion
and promote ideological causes
